In a surprising turn of events, the leadership of the French National Assembly has rejected a motion to impeach President Emmanuel Macron, filed by over a hundred left-wing deputies. The motion, spearheaded by the left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI), accused Macron of being responsible for the current political crisis and the rapid turnover of four prime ministers in just over a year.

The impeachment motion received only 5 votes in favor from the Assembly’s leadership, with 5 abstentions and 10 members voting against it. LFI lamented the result, pointing the finger at the far-right Rassemblement National party and its five abstentions, which they believe «saved» Macron from having to answer for the «political chaos» in the country.

«Despite the opposition’s rhetoric for public consumption, the far-right is the objective ally of Emmanuel Macron and is working to build a Macron-Le Pen bloc,» LFI said in a statement.

This second attempt to oust Macron comes as the interim Prime Minister, Sébastian Lecornu, is making a last-ditch effort to form a new government and reach a consensus on this year’s budget. Lecornu expressed optimism about the possibility of an agreement, even though the left-wing parties, including LFI, are not among those he is meeting with.

The left had previously tried in vain to promote an initial motion against Macron, knowing that even if it had been accepted, it would not have the necessary support to forcibly remove the president through parliamentary means.

This latest development highlights the complex political landscape in France, where the far-right appears to be playing a crucial role in shielding Macron from accountability, despite the left’s efforts to hold him responsible for the ongoing turmoil.
