Boric Condemns ‘Vulgar’ Perro Matapacos Image: ‘I Never Celebrated It’
In a powerful statement, Chilean President Gabriel Boric has firmly denounced the iconic ‘Perro Matapacos’ (Riot Dog) image that became a symbol of the 2019 social unrest in the country. During an interview with the Association of Chilean Broadcasters (Archi) on World Press Freedom Day, Boric did not mince words when addressing this controversial figure.
Boric described the ‘Perro Matapacos’ image as ‘offensive, demeaning, and vulgar’, making it clear that he has never celebrated or endorsed this representation. You will never find a statement from me reveling in or boasting about this vulgar image of the ‘Perro Matapacos’, as they called it,
the president stated firmly.
Acknowledging Human Rights Violations
While Boric acknowledged the important role of the Carabineros (Chilean police force) in serving the most remote areas of the country, he did not shy away from addressing the grave human rights violations that occurred during the 2019 social uprising. During the episode of the social outbreak, serious human rights violations were committed. These were verified by four international organizations. And that, there is no sense in trying to deny or act as if it never happened,

The president was also questioned about his decision to pardon Luis Castillo, who was sentenced to four years in prison for robbery and drug-related offenses. Boric acknowledged that this was ‘undesirable’ and ‘a mistake’, stating that pardons are not a blank check
and that those who commit crimes should face the consequences.
