Argentina Emerges as Global Lithium Powerhouse: 67 Projects and Counting

Noticias más leídas

Argentina is solidifying its position as a global leader in lithium production, with the recent environmental approvals granted to Chinese miner Ganfeng and Swiss company Lithium Argentina for the Pozuelos-Pastos Grandes (PPG) lithium project in the northern province of Salta. This milestone marks the country’s 67th lithium project, underscoring its growing prominence in the so-called «white gold» industry.

The PPG project, which spans the Salar de Pastos Grandes and Salar de Pozuelos basins, is a joint venture between Ganfeng (controlling 67%) and Lithium Argentina (33%). With an estimated 30-year lifespan, the project is slated to produce 150,000 tons of lithium carbonate equivalent annually in three 50,000-ton stages.

According to Lithium Argentina, the companies plan to seek inclusion of the PPG project in Argentina’s recently launched incentive regime for large-scale investments (RIGI) during the first half of 2026. The project is expected to require investments of around $2 billion, further cementing Argentina’s status as a prime destination for lithium development.

Argentina’s Lithium Ascent

The lithium sector is currently one of the most dynamic industries in Argentina, alongside the country’s thriving hydrocarbon industry. According to the latest report from the United States Geological Survey, Argentina is the world’s fifth-largest lithium producer, the third-largest in terms of reserves, and the global leader in lithium resources, alongside Bolivia.

Argentina’s Secretariat of Mining data shows that the country has 67 lithium projects in various stages of development. Of these, only seven are currently in production, including Fénix and Olaroz (Rio Tinto), Sal de Oro (Posco), Cauchari-Olaroz and Mariana (Ganfeng), Centenario Ratones (Eramet), and Tres Quebradas (Zijin Mining).

Positioning for the Future

With the advanced projects in the pipeline, Argentina is poised to climb the ranks of global lithium producers. The country’s vast lithium resources, coupled with the recent environmental approvals and investment incentives, suggest that Argentina’s lithium industry is on the cusp of a transformative growth phase.

As the world’s demand for lithium continues to soar, driven by the increasing adoption of electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, Argentina’s strategic position as a major lithium supplier is set to become even more crucial in the years to come.
