In a groundbreaking move, the municipality of Cerro Navia has partnered with Whoosh, Chile’s leading shared electric scooter platform, to bring a fleet of 400 electric scooters to the community. This makes Cerro Navia the first municipality in the northwestern sector of the capital to offer this innovative and sustainable transportation option to its residents.
Accessible and Eco-Friendly Mobility
The arrival of these electric scooters provides Cerro Navia’s residents with a nimble, personalized, and sustainable mode of transportation. Residents can easily access and return the scooters at any of the 147 designated parking stations throughout the municipality. To use the service, residents must download the Whoosh app, create an account, and add a payment method – then they can simply locate the nearest scooter, scan the QR code, and begin their journey.
Promoting Equality and Accessibility
Cerro Navia’s mayor, Mauro Tamayo, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, «For years, our municipalities have been forgotten, left on the margins of development and opportunities that have reached other sectors of Santiago. The arrival of this new modern and sustainable transportation alternative is not just an improvement in connectivity; it is an act of justice. This progress represents a concrete step towards territorial equality, towards a city where progress is not a privilege, but a right that reaches every municipality, every street, and every family.»
Whoosh’s Commitment to Inclusive Mobility
Whoosh’s Country Manager in Chile, Bernardo Barros, highlighted the company’s mission to bring technological and sustainable solutions to all municipalities, without distinction. «We want electromobility to be a reality accessible to all residents, not a privilege for certain sectors. With this launch, we continue to build a network of agile, inclusive, and modern transportation for the Metropolitan Region.»
Safety First
Safety is a fundamental pillar when using electric scooters. All vehicles are equipped with geolocation, regenerative brakes, automatic lights, and speed limiters with a maximum of 25 km/h (the legal limit), as well as 24/7 technical support. Additionally, in compliance with the Road Coexistence Law, the use of a helmet is mandatory when riding a scooter.
A Growing Network of Sustainable Mobility
With the addition of Cerro Navia, the network of municipalities offering sustainable and innovative mobility options continues to expand, now including Lo Barnechea, Vitacura, Las Condes, Macul, San Miguel, San Joaquín, La Florida, La Cisterna, and San Ramón. This year alone, Whoosh has recorded over 4 million trips and 7 million kilometers traveled in the Metropolitan Region.
Cerro Navia’s embrace of electric scooters represents a significant step towards a more connected, eco-friendly, and equitable future for its residents, setting an example for other municipalities to follow.
