In a stunning upset, Cobresal defeated Universidad de Chile (La U) 1-0 in their Monday matchup at the Estadio Nacional, closing out the 18th round of the Primera Liga. The northern club’s triumph was all the more impressive considering they played the entire second half with 10 men after defender Christian Moreno was sent off in the 61st minute.
The winning goal came in the 27th minute, when striker Diego Coelho headed home a perfect free-kick delivery from Jorge Henríquez, silencing the home crowd. Cobresal’s resilience was further tested in the dying moments, as La U were awarded a penalty in the 96th minute. However, Leandro Fernández’s spot-kick in the 98th minute was ultimately squandered, preserving the visitors’ hard-fought victory.
This result is a significant development in the league standings, as it allows league leaders Coquimbo Unido (41 points) to extend their advantage over the now second-placed La U (35 points). Cobresal, for their part, climbed to sixth place with 29 points.
In the next round, La U will host Unión Española, while Cobresal will welcome league leaders Coquimbo Unido to their home ground.
