Marcel Declines to Join Jara’s Campaign Team: ‘I Need to Focus on What the President Has Assigned Me’

Noticias más leídas

In a move that underscores the separation of government and electoral politics, Finance Minister Mario Marcel has declined an invitation to join the campaign team of presidential candidate Jeannette Jara (PC). In a dialogue with CNN Chile, the Cabinet member stated, «The President (Boric) has been clear that ministers should not get involved in political campaigns, and I am the Finance Minister, so it is not appropriate for me to be part of a team doing programmatic work

When asked about the possibility of the candidate herself requesting his participation, Marcel reiterated, «I believe there are probably many other names better suited to do that programmatic work. And I think that robbing Peter to pay Paul, in general, does not help much.» This firm stance effectively closes the door on any involvement in Jara’s campaign command.

Maintaining Focus on Ministerial Duties

The Finance Minister’s decision aligns with President Boric’s clear directive that cabinet members should not engage in electoral activities. Marcel emphasized, «I need to be focused on what the President has assigned me.» This underscores his commitment to his ministerial responsibilities, even as the composition of Jara’s campaign team generates anticipation.

Jara’s Team Takes Shape

Jara herself had indicated that she would inform the public in due time about the announcement of her campaign team. This comes after the confirmation of Bárbara Figueroa’s arrival, who will serve as the «link between the Communist Party and the campaign command.»

The exclusion of the Finance Minister from Jara’s team reflects the government’s efforts to maintain a clear separation between the executive branch and electoral politics, ensuring that ministers can focus on their official duties without being drawn into partisan campaigns.
