Lota Residents Eagerly Await Concrete Action to Address Chiflón del Diablo Mine Waste

Noticias más leídas

The iron contamination of beaches like La Conchilla and El Morro, caused by the waste discharge from the Chiflón del Diablo mine in the Bío Bío region, is a well-known issue in Lota. The mine, which suffered severe damage after the 2010 earthquake, is forced to evacuate its waters to prevent flooding in the area. Despite numerous announcements from various administrations, the problem persists.

Lota Residents Demand Concrete Action on Chiflón del Diablo Mine

Elizabeth Aguilera, the president of the Lota Cultural Heritage and Tourism Board, expressed hope that the funding for a pumping plant to treat the mine’s waters can be secured in the 2026 National Budget. Aguilera hopes this will not be «a flash in the pan» like in the past, as the local residents urgently need improvements to the tourist site.

The high concentration of iron is causing significant economic damage, as both fishing and seaweed collection have been affected in the area. Additionally, the beaches are no longer suitable for swimming due to the same issue.

Potential Investment Exceeding 500 Million Pesos

If the project moves forward favorably, the investment for the necessary works is expected to exceed 500 million pesos. The Radio station attempted to obtain a statement from the Cepas Foundation, the current administrator of the Lota Circuit, but they declined to comment on the matter.

Addressing the Root Cause

The local community’s persistent efforts to find a solution to the Chiflón del Diablo mine’s waste problem highlight the importance of addressing environmental issues that impact both the natural landscape and the livelihoods of the people. By investing in the necessary infrastructure to treat the mine’s waste, the authorities can not only restore the beaches and marine ecosystems but also support the economic activities that are crucial for the Lota community.
