As several figures from the Chile Vamos coalition have expressed their support for José Antonio Kast, Magdalena Piñera Morel, the eldest daughter of former President Sebastián Piñera, has scheduled a meeting with Evelyn Matthei and her father’s former collaborators on Monday. The goal is to reinforce the bond with the candidate and prevent a further defection of votes.
This comes after the former Undersecretary of the Interior, Jorge Atton, the former Undersecretary of Agriculture, Álvaro Cruzat, the former Undersecretary of the Environment, Ricardo Irarrázabal, and the former Minister Rodrigo Álvarez, all publicly announced their support for the Republican candidate.
Piñera’s Endorsement of Matthei
From the Democratic party, Senator Ximena Rincón stated that this meeting reaffirms that if former President Piñera were still alive, he would fully support Matthei and be her «campaign manager.»
In the same vein, UDI Deputy Sergio Bobadilla noted that the meeting is a positive and clear signal for the strengthening of Matthei’s candidacy.
Financial Support from the Piñera Family
It’s worth remembering that the Piñera Morel family has not only publicly supported Evelyn Matthei but has also donated money to her campaign, with contributions totaling $24 million.
This includes a $15 million donation from Cecilia Morel, Piñera’s wife, further solidifying the family’s commitment to Matthei’s candidacy.
Strengthening the Alliance
The meeting between Magdalena Piñera Morel and Evelyn Matthei is a strategic move to reinforce their political alliance and prevent a potential exodus of votes from the Chile Vamos coalition. As the former president’s daughter, Magdalena’s involvement is seen as a way to leverage the Piñera family’s influence and resources to bolster Matthei’s campaign.
This development highlights the complex political dynamics at play, as the Piñera family seeks to maintain its influence and ensure the success of their preferred candidate, Evelyn Matthei, in the face of defections to the rival Republican candidate, José Antonio Kast.
