Qatar Emerges as Formidable Rival for Chile’s 2036 Olympic Bid

Noticias más leídas

In a move that could significantly impact the 2036 Olympic Games race, Qatar has officially confirmed its intention to bid for the prestigious event. This announcement positions the oil-rich Gulf nation as a formidable rival to Chile, which has long been vying to host the coveted international sporting spectacle.

According to Reuters, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has stated that it is engaged in discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the selection process for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic host city. Qatar’s entry into the bidding race comes as a surprise to many, as the country has already made a significant mark on the global sports scene by hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Asian Cup.

Qatar’s bid for the 2036 Olympics is not the only Asian contender, as Saudi Arabia (set to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup) and South Korea have also expressed interest in securing the Olympic hosting rights. However, Qatar’s deep pockets and extensive sports infrastructure could give it a distinct advantage over its competitors.

In a statement, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, the president of the QOC, revealed that the country already possesses 95% of the necessary sports facilities to host the Olympics, and it has a comprehensive national plan to ensure the full availability of all required venues. The Qatari authority further emphasized that their plan for the 2036 Olympics is based on a long-term vision aimed at building a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable legacy.

Doha’s Hosting Experience

Qatar’s experience in hosting major sporting events, such as the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, the capital city, could give it an edge over other contenders. The successful organization of these events has demonstrated the country’s ability to manage large-scale international competitions, which could be a significant factor in the IOC’s decision-making process.

If Qatar’s bid is successful, it would become the first Middle Eastern country to host the Olympic Games, further solidifying the region’s growing influence in the world of sports. This development could have far-reaching implications, not only for the 2036 Olympics but also for the broader global sports landscape.

Chile’s Aspirations

Chile’s own bid for the 2036 Olympics has been a long-standing ambition, with the country hoping to make history by becoming the first South American nation to host the Games. The country’s rich sporting heritage and its recent success in hosting major events, such as the 2023 Pan American Games, have fueled its Olympic dreams.

However, the entry of Qatar, with its deep pockets and extensive sports infrastructure, could pose a significant challenge to Chile’s aspirations. The competition for the 2036 Olympics is expected to be fierce, with several other countries, including Indonesia, Turkey, India, and potentially Egypte, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Denmark, and Canada, also vying for the hosting rights.

As the bidding process unfolds, the world will closely watch the competition between Chile and Qatar, as well as the other contenders, to see who will emerge victorious in the race to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
