Fluor Leads the Way: Achieving Net Zero and Eliminating 60,000 Tons of Carbon Dioxide

In a remarkable feat of environmental stewardship, Fluor, the global engineering and construction company, has achieved its Net Zero 2023 commitment ahead of schedule, eliminating a total of 60,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) last year. This remarkable accomplishment, certified by ERM Certification & Verification Services Incorporated, showcases Fluor’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and its position as a leader in its industry.

The journey to this milestone was not an easy one, but Fluor’s dedication and innovative approach have paid off. Through operational changes in 100 of its facilities and the collective efforts of its global team of over 30,000 employees, the company has managed to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero.

Driving Sustainable Change

According to Ernesto Delannoy, the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Director of Fluor Latin America, the key to this achievement was a multifaceted approach. We have managed to implement various actions that have had a significant impact on environmental protection, while also resulting in cost savings and improved efficiency for Fluor and our clients. The company’s efforts focused on reducing electricity, steam, and heating usage, transitioning to more eco-friendly fuels for its fixed and mobile equipment, and optimizing fuel consumption in its vehicle fleet. Additionally, Fluor opted for environmentally-friendly refrigerants in its air conditioning systems.

Continuous Commitment to Sustainability

Fluor’s journey towards sustainability is not a new one; the company has been working towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions for the past 18 years. However, the announcement of its Net Zero 2023 goal in 2021 marked a significant acceleration in its efforts. As Delannoy stated, Sustainability is a core part of our purpose, so this journey does not end with the achievement of this goal. We will continue to offer innovative and sustainable solutions to our clients, so that together we can reduce carbon emissions and have a more significant global impact.

Complementary Initiatives and Future Objectives

Fluor’s efforts to achieve Net Zero were further bolstered by the purchase of low-carbon or carbon-free energy, combined with Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) and high-quality carbon offset credits. The company has also set new objectives for its operations in Chile, aiming to eliminate an additional 22 tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2023 through the use of its own photovoltaic plant and other initiatives. By 2024, Fluor Chile expects to reduce its lighting-related energy consumption by 7.5%, eliminating approximately 8 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

Conclusion

Fluor’s remarkable achievement in reaching its Net Zero 2023 commitment ahead of schedule is a testament to the company’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and its position as a leader in the engineering and construction industry. Through innovative solutions, operational changes, and a collective effort from its global team, Fluor has not only reduced its carbon footprint but has also set an example for others to follow. As the company continues to push the boundaries of sustainable practices, it is clear that Fluor is paving the way for a greener future.
